Kikimora x Pan-Pan present...
Voka Gentle + Ensemble Bednieri

Pan-Pan, Digbeth
Pan-Pan & Kikimora Records welcome Voka Gentle to Birmingham.
Operating on a plane between avant-garde indie, bubbling electronica and cosmic psychedelia, Voka Gentle have an addictive, amorphous sound. A three limbed beast made up of twins Ellie and Imogen Mason, and William J. Stokes, each is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer with an imperious understanding of three dimensional sound.
“Hard to classify and even harder not to love” - Uncut
We're delighted to invite Birmingham's own Ensemble Bednieri - a choir singing polyphonic folk music from Georgia - to open up for Voka Gentle. They'll be performing an uplifting and sonorous mix; from harvesting and feasting songs to pagan healing songs and medieval chants

WHATS ON
Voka Gentle | listen here |
Voka Gentle are one of the UK’s wittiest young bands, but they wear their intellect lightly. Their latest album 'Domestic Bliss' (on State 51) is overflowing with throat-grabbing, avant-garde indie rock songs studded with eccentric choices: a synth with its keys jammed, playing a ghostly tune of its own making; field recordings – Morris dancers, motorbikes – captured on binaural headphones.
Since their acclaimed second album ‘WRITHING!’, the trio (William J Stokes, Ellie Mason and Imogen Mason) have been busy honing their collective craft, now emerging with an evolved confidence and creative curiosity that explains why they are held in such high esteem by both their musical peers and legends of their genre (Wayne Coyne, Bombay Bicycle Club’s Jack Steadman, Animal Collective’s Panda Bear, Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, to name just a few).

Ensemble Bednieri is a Birmingham based choir singing polyphonic folk music from Georgia; a small country on the eastern edge of the Black Sea, nestled between the snowy Caucus mountains in the north the arid Turkish lands in the south.
Spanning numerous regional styles and vocal techniques from across Georgia, we will share an uplifting and sonorous mix; from harvesting and feasting songs to pagan healing songs and medieval chants; from the lyrical lovers singing on the hillside of Adjara to the philosophical musings of a shepherd in the Tushetian mountains.
Ensemble Bednieri is led by Eb Jordan, a musician dedicated to cultural appreciation and ethnographically informed practice. Eb has studied with a wide variety of Georgian folk specialist both in the UK and Georgia for over eight years and also takes inspiration from Frank Kane’s approach of vibrational sharing and voice placement within the work.
The meaning of ‘Bednieri’ is fateful, joyful and happy. This sums up our vibe; it’s the feeling we get when we sing these ancient songs and share them with the world.
