ABOUT THIS RELEASE
You may have already encountered these songs in and around Birmingham’s DIY music spaces - whether loved, loathed, or half-heard while swaying with a pint in hand. All responses are valid.
Manic Pixie Dream Pop is the Monoxide Brothers’ first EP, released on Kikimora Records. For them, the release is a cathartic collection featuring their singles “Spine” and “Horses,” alongside “Final Girl” and “£3.40.” With one eye on the crumbling walls of Britain’s economy and the other on the social injustice seeping into its streets, the duo uses these songs to navigate everything from the harrowing daily reality of male violence and misogyny all the way to the trials and tribulations of eating sandwiches and sending emails.
At its core, the EP is a collaborative, DIY cluster of electronic beats, harsh bass, sleazy synths and bittersweet pop hooks - born from lyrics scrawled in Sophie’s iPhone, captured in a Digbeth lock-up, and lovingly mixed in a friend’s home studio.
These tracks embody everything the Monoxide Brothers are and have always been: brash, bold, weirdly catchy and teeming with anxiety.
Monoxide Brothers extend their thanks to B.B. Kaizo, House Cloud, Tom Richards, Sam Frank Wood, Rosie Tee, Rose Davies, Jacob McDonald, Leon Trimble, The Big Hell, Tim Mobbs and Deb Grant for their unwavering support. Without them, there would be no dream pop - or mania*. Emily & Sophie also thank YOU the listener, for supporting DIY music and helping make this strange hybrid a reality.
*No cables were broken in the making of this record.
